Happily ever after

Happily ever after I bring greetings from the little redbrick school up the Charles River although my classes are all at the medical school campus, which is in the Longwood Medical Area, and the labs Ive chosen to rotate in are all at Mass General Hospital. So really Im more across the river than up the river, and of course I still actually live on MITs campus. Grad school has been treating me well. Ive been doing mostly the same things this winter that I did last winter: going to class, reading lots of papers, mixing small volumes of colorless liquids in the lab the difference is that now Im getting paid significantly more to do it. (Ugh, I just did the math Im only getting $3.50 more an hour as a grad student than I was as a UROP. Well, at least my paychecks are bigger.) Im also TAing this semester, and of course Im trying to plan Adams and my wedding without losing my already small parcel of sanity. I havent picked a lab yet just like you dont pick a major at MIT until after your first year, you dont pick a lab in grad school until youre ready. When I do pick a lab at the beginning of the summer, my choices will basically be between 1) a C. elegans neurobiology lab that does screens for proteins that have particular functions in the neuromuscular junction, 2) a mouse immunology lab that works with proteins in the cytoskeleton to see what they do and how they cause disease, and 3) a mouse neurobiology lab that studies how particular stem cells decide to become different kinds of neurons, with an eye toward repairing spinal cord injury. All in all, grad school isnt that much different from MIT undergrad, except that I have less work to do, I live in an apartment rather than a dorm, and I have to take the T a lot. Hes planning to defer his admission to the masters program, work for a year or twor, then go back to grad school the company hes working for will pay his tuition and also his full salary while hes in the masters program, and hell do his thesis research there. Hes really excited about his job all of his professors have assured him that the company is a really good fit for him personality-wise and in terms of his research interests. We just signed a lease on a (much) bigger apartment north of Boston, where well move in June with our bunny, and of course well be getting married in September our wedding website is here, for people (moms) who like to look at this sort of thing. The ceremony will be held at Memorial Church in Cambridge, and were having a wonderful science-filled reception at the Museum of Science. And then well go on our honeymoon and then at some (distant) point in the future Ill finish my PhD and Adam will do his masters and well have little airplane-building, biology-loving babies. This creates pathetic fallacy this shows that they are all on edge with one another and that they can’t be natural it is as if their emotions have been chilled and this suggests something bad is going to happen. The writer uses similes such as â€Å"blown off my feet into the air like a dry leaf in high wind â€Å"this is an effective techniques because it tells the reader that the explosion struck so hard that Persephone Hadley seemed to literally fly in the air and the words â€Å"dry† give the reader the feel of how hot it may be that she becomes this â€Å"dry†. This gives the explosion the power to â€Å"throw† her away because of the impact using personification .The phrase â€Å"fraction of a second† tells the reader that it happened so fast that she was unable to even stop or control her actions and she was just being thrown in the air like a toy . â€Å"Billowing smoke shot out of the shopping centre†. This makes the smoke come alive, like it has moved and shaped its way .The way that smoke â€Å"shot† out gives it a lot of energy and this creates movement into the picture. The adjective â€Å"billowing† may also give it energy and make the smoke grow, so therefore personification is used to enhance the picture of smoke coming out of the shopping centre. Another example would be â€Å"intense heat† the effect of this on the reader will make them feel just how big the blast was on sephy’s back and how close it was to her even though she was a certain distance away to the blast. Blackman also uses onomatopoeia to create an image of the bomb in our minds. Some examples in this passage include; â€Å"boom â€Å"and â€Å"popped†. These words make the passage descriptive and it give attention to what’s going on; these make the picture in our mind more detailed and concise. Overall, Malorie Blackman uses many techniques such as similes, adverbs, Verbs, adjectives and onomatopoeia to create on accurate image of the bomb scene in our minds, to engage us the audience in the novel and make us a part of the novel.

Havisham- Carol Ann Duffy - 680 Words

In her morbid poem Havisham, Carol Ann Duffy redefines one of Charles Dickens most memorable characters, Miss Havisham. Jilted at the alter by her one true love, Dickens portrayed Havisham as an old spinster, her life wasted away trying to gain revenge on all men. Through her dramatic monologue Havisham, Duffy gives the disturbed old woman a voice to express her feelings about her wasted life. One of the themes that I found fascinating in this poem was the idea that a moment of betrayal can destroy a persons life and identity. After introducing her lover as â€Å"beloved sweetheart bastard†, Havisham tells us that â€Å"not a day since then/ I havent wished him dead†. The preposition â€Å"Then† clearly refers to the day her lover abandoned her on†¦show more content†¦Her reflection in the mirror is something other than herself and she asks the rhetorical question- â€Å"who did this/ to me†. Interestingly, at first it seems as if the betrayal of her lover is the cause of her destruction, but really it is Havishams inability to escape one moment in her past, that has caused her to choose this life for herself. Havishams confused feelings and loss of humanity is continued over verse three and four as she resorts to â€Å"sounds not words† and she tells us of â€Å"loves/ hate†. This oxymoron is split over verse three and four, and reminds us that Havisham cannot ever escape her past, or forgive any man that would betray her. For her, love always coexists with hate and she can never love a human without also hating them and fearing betrayal. I believe Havishams whole character is epitomised in the second to last phrase, â€Å"give me a male corpse for a long slow honeymoon†. This gruesome depiction of Havishams long desired honeymoon clearly shows just how disturbed this old woman has become, all because of one moment of betrayal. Everything she does and everything she dreams of has taken a distorted, unn atural and sickening twist, and Duffy definitely implies some sort of mental illness or psychosis. The forceful imperative â€Å"give me† shows Havishams desire for the power she lost years ago, and the idea of honeymooning with a â€Å"male corpse† also expresses Havishams need for control over something powerless. Rhetorical Analysis Of Clare Boothe Luce - 1102 Words

Rhetorical Analysis Article: Luce In 1960, American journalist and politician Clare Boothe Luce speaks to journalists at the Women’s National Press Club. She brings up the topic of integrity. Not only does integrity affect journalists, but also the media as a whole. From the beginning, she is straightforward with the audience, she is going to give them hell. She goes on to say that everyone in the audience will be revolted, but should listen through. This prepares the room full of female journalists to feel attacked by her criticisms of the American press. Luce argues that integrity needs to be restored in the media, to do this she appeals to their values while using a defensive tone along with a positive one, while also creating†¦show more content†¦Stating â€Å"speaker that criticizes the weaknesses† and acknowledging that she doesn’t expect an â€Å"enthusiastic response† or a â€Å"friendly† response. She shows the audience what she expects and makes it clear that she isn’t trying to be the audience’s friend, but rather their teacher. Luce wants to restore integrity into the system and wants to teach them how to do this. It’s an effective choice because people generally dislike being told how to do something, so she informs the audience that they aren’t going to like her. This works well because she approaches it from the audiences point of view. Luce shifts to an attack on their beliefs of journalism at line seventeen. Phrases like â€Å"more bored† and â€Å"more revolted.† This shows that what she is about to say isn’t going to be agreeable and is going to be an attack on their beliefs about journalism. None the less they need to listen so they can fix American journalism. A few lines later she states â€Å"I am not a volunteer â€Å" and reminds them â€Å"You asked for it.† This is in the hopes of taking some of the audience’s criticism away from her, putting it back on themselves for inviting her. Luce makes the audience reconsider themselves and therefore relieves some of the pressure on her. It was effective because her purpose was clear, it got the point across and redirected to the audiences emotions towards themselves. Luce changes to a knowledgeable tone at line 26,
